Sandstone Concrete Pool Deck Upgrade

A well-loved New Jersey backyard pool with a worn, exposed aggregate deck; resurfaced into a warm Sandstone flagstone finish that finally matched the care put into the rest of the space.

PROJECT AT A GLANCE

Color Theme:                                Sandstone

Location:                               New Jersey

Main Issues:            Exposed Aggregate

Surface:                        Concrete Pool Deck

What This Pool Deck Looked Like Before

This was a backyard that people clearly spent time in. The homeowners had put real effort into making the space feel like theirs. But the concrete pool deck had worn down to the point where it was impossible to ignore. The top surface layer had eroded away over time, leaving a rough, pitted finish with exposed aggregate scattered across the entire slab. Dark staining and discoloration had settled into the worn areas. Cracks had formed near the pool edge. The concrete looked like a different generation from everything around it.

The Finished Pool Deck: After RenuKrete

Now the pool deck looks like it was built for this backyard. The Sandstone finish brings warm, natural tones to a space that had been dragged down by cold, rough concrete for years. The flagstone pattern covers every section; from the wider area near the house along the fence line, around the pool corners, past the diving board, and through the narrow stretches near the handrails. The gravel borders and flower beds that were always there now sit next to a surface that actually complements them instead of clashing with everything in sight.

Project Overview

This New Jersey backyard reflects a high level of care, with white fencing defining the space, gravel beds lining the perimeter, seasonal plantings, and a well-kept lawn beyond. The rectangular pool with a diving board and handrails sits at the center, surrounded by a pool deck that runs continuously between the water and the gravel borders. While the surrounding elements had been maintained, the original concrete surface had not. Over time, the top layer had worn away almost entirely, leaving exposed aggregate across most of the deck. The surface was rough and pitted underfoot, with widespread staining and cracking along the pool edge and expansion joints, making it the only part of the space that felt neglected.

The deck was resurfaced with the Sandstone finish, introducing a warm, tan-toned flagstone pattern that aligns with the rest of the yard. The hand-sculpted design follows the pool’s shape, navigates tight corners around the diving board and handrails, and brings continuity back to the space, all completed directly over the existing concrete.

What Makes Sandstone Stand Out

 • Hand-sculpted flagstone pattern with natural variation in size and shape
• Warm, natural tan tones that pair with yellow, cream, and earth-toned homes.
• Seamless transitions at spa steps, diving board bases, and surrounding edges

• Warm, natural-toned finish for a relaxed, cohesive appearance
• Sealed surface engineered to resist UV, pool chemicals, and freeze-thaw cycles

What RenuKrete Homeowners Have to Say

Workers were wonderful. Product seems great. All looks good. The only problem is the power washing water got into the pool and I'm having quite a problem clearing it up-couldn't be avoided.

We LOVE our new RenuKrete patio! The 5 man crew was professional and polite and their leader explained everything to us before they executed it. RenuKrete provided a short 7 minute tutorial so we knew what to expect. The crew left our backyard cleaned up, vacuumed our pool and even blew off dust from our adjacent screened porch. A+ experience!

I was a bit skeptical at first but watching the progress and seeing the finished product we could not be happier with our decision to go with Renu Krete! They lifted one of the slabs as well and it is perfect! Our 38 yr old pool patio looks brand new! The crew was very polite and friendly, they kept the work area clean and explained each step of the job!
