Wyandanch, located in Suffolk County, New York, is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) within the Town of Babylon. Its population was 12,990 according to the 2020 census. Named after Chief Wyandanch, a leader of the Montaukett Native American tribe during the 17th century, this area was formerly known as Half Way Hollow Hills, West Deer Park, and Wyandance. The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) renamed it Wyandanch in 1903 to honor Chief Wyandanch and eliminate confusion between nearby railroad stations. The hamlet’s history reflects waves of immigrants, and it remains unincorporated.
