Melville is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. The area was originally known to Native Americans as Sunsquams. In the 17th century, it was called Samuel Ketcham’s Valley and later known as Sweet Hollow. In 1854, it was renamed Melville in honor of American novelist Herman Melville, author of “Moby-Dick.” The population was 19,284 according to the 2020 census. Notably, the headquarters of Newsday, Long Island’s largest circulation newspaper, is in Melville, and the area has a rich literary history.
